Directions for BrainSTEPS Consultants Completing the BISF:

1. Ask the student which of the following Symptom Changes they experienced during the past week.

2. Emphasize that you are looking for Symptoms since their brain injury occurred.

3. Choose the correct Symptom from the lists below based on the student’s self-report.

4. Discuss the various Academic Support Options listed below each chosen Symptom with the school team.

5. Choose one or more Academic Support Options by clicking on the box next to each option. These Academic Support Options should be determined by the BrainSTEPS consultant, in conjunction with the student’s teachers.

6. The BrainSTEPS Consultant should review all current Symptoms and complete the remaining sections of the BrainSTEPS BISF with the school team.

7. The BrainSTEPS BISF can be saved and made available for immediate download as a pdf document. The BrainSTEPS Consultant can also email the BrainSTEPS BISF to school staff and parents directly from this application at the conclusion of the school meeting.

8. The student’s teachers should refer to the BrainSTEPS BISF document and implement the recommended Academic Support Options during the school day to help alleviate the student’s brain injury-related symptoms to promote learning.

9. BrainSTEPS Consultant should follow up with the student, parent, and school team within 30 days to review and update the BISF.
